Hull skin And Core
Replacement
In 2017, 3DT collaborated with BM Composites in Mallorca on one of the most ambitious composite projects in boatbuilding history: the complete removal and replacement of the outer skin and core of a 35m sailing yacht, all while the vessel remained upright on cradles and without disturbing any interior furniture or equipment. The original outer skin was replaced with a Sprint Carbon Fibre system, which was laminated and cured at the STP shipyard in Palma.
Although there were no visible differences once the project was completed, the yacht was completely transformed.
3DT was brought on board by BM Composites to provide comprehensive design support across various critical elements, including:
Custom oven zones spanning the entire length of the hull
Multiple custom cradles, designed to be moved and repositioned for full access to the hull
Jack-up plans to facilitate the removal and replacement of cradles
A groundbreaking core kit design, utilizing thermoformed core material on a CNC-controlled adaptive mould
On-site production support throughout the duration of the project
This ambitious overhaul resulted in a yacht that was both structurally enhanced and visually indistinguishable from its original form, delivering an unparalleled achievement in composite yacht construction.
